It’s normal to worry about sending your child to preschool for the first time. You worry that they will get homesick when you leave or that they may not get along with the other children. In today’s post, we will give you a few tips on how to start preparing your child for preschool in order to put some of your fears to rest. If you have any additional questions or you would like to learn more about our preschool program, contact Valley Child Care and Learning Centers today!
Establish a Set Schedule
Most, if not all, preschools generally have a set schedule that the children follow on a daily basis. Establishing a schedule at home will allow your children to easily transition into the schedule that they will follow at school. If you don’t establish a schedule, your child may find the transition difficult, and it may cause problems when the teachers try to enforce the rules. You can easily create a schedule by doing certain activities at the same time each day, such as waking up, eating a mid-morning snack, and taking a nap. If these are things that you do on a daily basis as it is, then it shouldn’t be difficult for your child to adapt to their new schedule.
Plan a Tour of the School
Children can have a difficult time getting used to a place where they have never been before. If you know that this is the case with your little one, it may be a good idea to call the school and schedule a tour so that your kiddo can become familiar with the surroundings while you are present. In some cases, the school may offer an orientation session where your little one will be able to attend the school for few hours, get to know the teachers, and meet some of their classmates!
Listen to Your Child’s Worries
One of the most important things that you can do when preparing your child for preschool is to listen to their worries. Each child will have different worries about what to expect. While one might worry about making friends, another one might worry about being away from home. The best thing that you can do as a parent is to listen to what they are worried about and try to put their mind at ease. If your little one is worried about not being able to sleep during nap time, suggest that they bring their favorite stuffed animal to remind them of home and make them feel more comfortable. If you have a kiddo who is worried about not making any friends, see if you can set up a playdate with another kid that will be attending the same school.
